Zaragoza, Spain

Zaragoza, capital city of the region of Aragon, in Spain, is one of the main cities of the country.

Blessed with a rich historical, monumental and cultural legacy, it was once the capital of a territory that nowadays represents about the half of Spain.

Its location within the current boundaries of the region of Aragon (and of the whole north of Spain) makes it a privileged and unique municipality, both in terms of economic strength and as a tourist destination. Zaragoza is within equal distances from the nation's capital city, Madrid, from the Mediterranean coast - with cities such as Barcelona and Valencia -, and from Bilbao (Atlantic Ocean, including ferry-boats to the UK and France). The region limits with France to the North and it only takes about 2 hours to drive from Zaragoza to the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees -in the province of Huesca-, considered by many to hold the most beautiful and breathtaking scenarios in the whole mountain range, in addition to presenting varied tourist options to its visitors, including several ski resorts.

To the South of Zaragoza is the province of Teruel, home to several sites with historic / artistic heritage that have been designated as "World Heritage" by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), specifically an extraordinary form of architecture, called "Mudejar", comprised of a unique mixture of Muslim, Jewish and Christian traits, from the time when these three cultures co-existed in Aragon. (Note that also a natural reserve in the aforementioned Pyrenees, namely, the National Park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido - Mont Perdu, or "The Lost Mountain" -, has been designated as "World Heritage").

Zaragoza is also a main religious destination. Two medieval cathedrals dominate the square known as the "Plaza del Pilar", located in what once was the main square of the Roman city of Caesar Augusta, which received its name as one of the main settlements of the Roman Empire in Hispania (Spain).

Night-life in the city is famous across Spain, and so are the city's main festivals which take place every October.

Specially worth mentioning in this brief description of the city and the area are other natural wonders such as its lakeside areas, located in the province of Zaragoza. A beautiful example is Gallocanta, resting site for migratory birds on their way to and from Africa.

And of course, River Ebro - from the latin word "Iber" that gave name to the whole of Spain and Portugal: Iberia.

The city of Zaragoza itself was built more than two thousand years ago beside the Ebro, which is Spain's largest-flowing river.

Complete with its monuments, museums, gastronomy, shopping areas, tourist facilities, natural wonders, strategic location, privileged communications by land and air, cultural relevance, and now, the 2008 Universal Exhibition (Expo Zaragoza 2008) -which will attract millions of visitors-, Zaragoza is undoubtedly the place to go.
